Abstract:
Antimicrobial resistance is a multifaceted public health issue that requires holistic, multidisciplinary, and data-driven solutions. Over recent years, the genetic determinants of resistance have been fully identified thanks to the advent of whole-genome sequencing at high resolution. On the other hand, resistance mechanisms have been elucidated in laboratory strains. However, research linking the epidemiology and evolution of resistance in naturally occurring strains with their complex phenotypic features is still evolving. I will present research from an integrated framework where we identified and fully characterized the genomic epidemiology and evolution of an emerging hyper-resistant and multidrug-resistant K. pneumoniae strain. We will also discuss how we linked these findings with the clinical features of patients from Electronic Health Record (EHR) data. These findings underscore the effort to link genotype to the phenotype of clinical strains.
