Biography

Dr. Woyke earned her Ph.D. in Microbiology at Eberhard Karls University Tübingen in Germany. In 2004, she began her postdoctoral research at the DOE Joint Genome Institute, focusing on the symbiont community of a gutless oligochaete using metagenomics. In 2007, she expanded her research by integrating metagenomics with single-cell sequencing to explore microbial dark matter. Dr. Woyke began her role as the Microbial Genomics Program Lead in 2009 and, in 2021, assumed the position of Deputy Director of the User Program at the JGI. Beyond her JGI responsibilities, she is an Adjunct Scientist at the Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences since 2012 and an Adjunct Professor in the Life and Environmental Sciences department at the University of California, Merced.
