Johannes studied Mathematics at the Leopold Franzens University of Innsbruck, Austria, where he did his PhD on deep-learning for inverse problems. He now is a postdoc at the MRC-LMB in Cambridge in the group of Sjors Scheres, where he works on machine-learning methods for modeling continuous structural heterogeneity in cryo-EM reconstruction.
